You've seen the short answer for why Silicon Valley Bank failed already: they ran out of money. The longer answer is much more interesting. As a mortgage banker, I wanted to dig deeper, beyond the articles I read online from the typical financial press outlets. Through my research of primary source documents, I found that heavy exposure to mortgage-backed securities was a big part of the problem. In this video, I pick apart Silicon Valley Bank's balance sheet to highlight the obvious problems which led to the 2nd biggest bank collapse in US history. In future installments in this series of videos on Silicon Valley Bank, I'm going to discuss how this bank failure may impact mortgage rates and products going forward.
