Was Hitler wrong?

Was Hitler wrong? Many get upset when this question is asked. Yet, it must be asked. In a world where nothing is wrong and nothing is right how can we say he was wrong? If right and wrong do not exist, Hitler could not have been wrong either. If he was wrong we could be wrong too. While we deny right and wrong when it suits us we all have an innate sense of right and wrong but we disagree on the specifics because we put ourselves in the place of God making fantasy moral standards to suit ourselves.

In a relativistic world one of the problems, of refusing to consider seriously the historical and philosophical impact of Hitler and his underlying presuppositions, is that we are destined to repeat what has happened in the past. Especially seeing as our societies in the West hold to the same fundamental principles. It's not like history has never repeated itself before. Is it?

I am by no means the first to see this happening. Orwell, Huxley, Schaeffer and many others have all predicted that we would see a totalitarian takeover occur. It will not happen as obviously as the Nazis. It will be more subtle and manipulative. It will use the media to distort reality. It will use censorship to control what people hear. It will use fear and terror to manipulate people into wanting to give a totalitarian elite all the power they want.

People will no longer be able to think rationally because they will be too terrified. They will hand over all their freedoms and turn away from truth and reason. They will turn away from Jesus and look to men and technology for salvation. Perhaps some can already see a dystopian future slipping into the present?

We all have opinions as to what is right and wrong. We base our ideas on what we like and what we don't like. As such we have no basis for saying anything is actually right or wrong. Our morality is nothing more than our personal preference. If we all have different opinions and preferences and that is all there is, then we have no basis for saying anything is actually right or wrong - including Hitler. Do you see the problem?

However, if there is a Creator who has spoken and tells us what is right and wrong then we do have a basis for understanding right and wrong as absolutes because they are from outside our various opinions and preferences. We then have a basis for an absolute morality by which to judge ourselves, our neighbour, Hitler and by which to judge the State!
This is one reason why the God of the Bible is so relevant to our societies today. The Jesus of the Bible is the answer for each of us and for our world on so many levels. He gives us the only sufficient basis for society, for morality, for knowing, for meaning and value, for justice, for law, for science, for reason, for love.

Without the God, who has spoken, you have no basis for making any moral judgement about anyone or anything, including God. Without God you are without hope in the world. With God you have a hope that will not be disappointed though you may have to wait to see it realised. With Jesus you know death is not the end. This life is temporary and we are all going to leave. Jesus had demonstrated that death is not the end. It is merely moving house. Admittedly, it is a big move!
