Detectives Russ Parker and Dean Santoni investigate a h0micide at a flower store in Tacoma, Washington. The victim, a 60-year-old Asian male who owned the shop, was found by his nephew Steve Saito, who arrived for work in the morning. The cash register has been emptied and the scene is clean with no witnesses or evidence.

During their investigation, Santoni proposes a controversial idea based on his college studies, which suggests that plants have emotions and reactions similar to humans. Since the plants in the shop were the only witnesses, he suggests using a polygraph to determine the culprit. Parker is skeptical but agrees to try the idea since they have no other leads. They gather a group of local delinquents for a line-up and bring in a polygraphist to test the theory. However, none of the men elicits a response from the plants.

As Parker begins to dismiss the idea, Steve suddenly enters the shop, and the plants react strongly to him. Under the scrutiny of the detectives, Steve confesses to m3rdering his uncle for his inheritance.
