There was no historic comeback for Liverpool and Real Madrid's defence of their Champions League title rolled on into the quarter-finals on Wednesday.

Liverpool never really came close to overcoming the three-goal deficit from the 5-2 first leg defeat against Real on their own turf at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, losing 1-0 on the night to end their hopes of another run to the final.

Karim Benzema scored late in the game and Madrid advanced to the last eight for the third straight season with a 6-2 aggregate score.

Liverpool were trying to pull off something never done before in the Champions League - wipe out a three-goal loss as the visitors.

But they never came close. Real have now won six out of seven matches against Liverpool in the tournament -including last year's final - the other ended in a draw.

Napoli beat Eintracht Frankfurt 3-0 in the other round-of-16 match on Wednesday to join Madrid, AC Milan, Bayern Munich, Benfica, Chelsea, Inter Milan and Manchester City in the draw for the last eight ties on Friday.
