Anicius Manlius Severinus Boethius was a Roman senator, consul, magister officiorum, historian, and philosopher in the early Middle Ages. He was a crucial figure in translating Greek classics into Latin, a forerunner of the Scholastic movement, and, along with Cassiodorus, one of the sixth century's two most prominent Christian scholars.
Boethius was born in Rome just a few years after the collapse of the Western Roman Empire. He was a member of the Anicii family, but when the sudden family declined, he was left without a family and was raised by Quintus Aurelius Memmius Symmachus, who later became a consul.
After learning Latin and Greek as a young man, Boethius became a well-known politician in the Ostrogothic Kingdom. He was a senator by age 25 and a consul by age 33. Later, Theodoric the Great chose him to be his personal advisor.
Boethius wanted to translate all of the Greek classics for Western scholars so that they could understand how the ideas of Plato and Aristotle fit with Christian theology.
Among others, he published numerous transcriptions and commentaries of the works of Nicomachus, Porphyry, and Cicero and wrote extensively on music, mathematics, and theology.
Even though his translations were not finished because of his untimely death, he was a big reason Aristotle's works were still around during the Renaissance.
He made the Aristotelian idea of the independence of each field of knowledge in a way that could justify Aristotelian-style natural science and ethics even though they disagreed with the revealed truth.
All of these writings, which significantly impacted the Middle Ages, were heavily influenced by the ideas of Greek Neoplatonists like Porphyry and Iamblichus.
Boethius was not just an intermediary, though. He was an independent thinker but part of a tradition that puts little weight on philosophical originality.
In today's video, we'll discuss about Boethius quotes to learn more about this great Roman senator, consul, magister officiorum, historian, and philosopher ideas and thoughts.
