One of the most inspiring poems of all time.

While Rudyard Kipling wrote poetry, novels, and articles, he is most notably known for his collection of short stories called The Jungle Book, written in 1894. A British writer, Kipling, won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1907.

‘If—’ was first published in Kipling’s volume of short stories and poems, Rewards and Fairies, in 1910. It has become one of Kipling’s best-known poems, and was even voted the UK’s favourite poem of all time in a poll of 1995.

Kipling advises his son to live with self-control, moderation, and composure. The son should always keep his wits about him, never overreacting; he should learn to be confident without being arrogant, accept hardships without dwelling on them, absorb losses and straightway work to rebuild with courage and behave with dignity. Living this way, Kipling poses, will make his son a true man. This is a poem of advice not just from a father to a son, but from all fathers to all sons: from all parents to their children.

Kipling conveys his ideas about how to win this life, and after all, how to be a good human being.

We love this poem and hope you enjoyed this rendition.
