Cluster C Personality Disorders

Personality Disorders represent EXTREME variations of normal personality traits in 4 areas:

1. Anxious-dependency traits
2. Psychopathy-antisocial
3. Social Withdrawal
4. Compulsivity

Personality is an individual's characteristic pattern of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that define his or her quality of experiences and relationships.

The rate of personality change slows over time but does not cease. If personality traits evolve continuously across the lifespan, we have an opportunity to develop and support more adaptive functioning and social relationships.

Personality disorders are among the most challenging and complex group of disorders to treat.

According to the APA there are 10 personality disorders. These disorders are grouped into Cluster A, Cluster B, Cluster C.

Genetics: It is the personality traits and not the personality disorders themselves that are inherited.
Neurobiological: There are differences in size and function of specific structures of the brain and people with some personality disorders. Certain neurotransmitters including neurohormones may regulate and influence temperament.
Psychological factors from childhood experiences.
Environmental factors: half of the variance accounting for personality traits emerges from the environment.  Childhood neglect or trauma has been established as a risk factor for personality disorders
Diathesis stress model: Two-way directionality among stressors and diathesis. Genetic and biological traits are believed to influence the way an individual responds to the environment, while at the same time, the environment is thought to influence the expression of inherited traits. Many Studies have suggested a strong correlation between trauma, neglect, and other dysfunctional family or social patterns of interaction on the development of personality disorders among individuals with certain personality traits and temperament.
