WHAT STATES ALLOW AUTONOMOUS NP PRACTICE?

The following states grant you full practice authority as soon as you earn your license.

✅ States with the Fewest Restrictions to Practice

For FNPs who want to practice autonomously, any of the full-practice states offer a welcoming professional environment. Such states include:

✅ Washington state
✅ Arizona: has virtually no restrictions on FNP practice. It requires only that NPs must practice within their area of specialty and certification.
✅ New Mexico: New Mexico offers practice autonomy for FNPs plus a $3,000 tax credit and tuition reimbursement to qualified candidates who work in underserved areas, particularly rural areas.

🚨Most Restrictive States to Practice
At the other end of the spectrum are a handful of states that significantly restrict nurse practitioners’ authority. Severely restricted-practice states include:

🚨 Florida: NPs cannot diagnose or treat patients in Florida without physician involvement, and they can only prescribe certain limited medications. State law does not define whether NPs can be primary care providers

Florida Restrictions: Inability to involuntarily commit a suicidal patient under the Baker Act, inability to sign death certificates, lack of recognition as primary care providers on Medicaid and Medicare and private insurance company provider panels and other restrictions.

🚨 Georgia: Despite a severe shortage of primary care providers in rural areas, Georgia has thus far not lifted restrictions to give NPs more autonomy.

🚨 Tennessee: The state of Tennessee places significant restrictions on NPs, and physicians in the state have actively opposed scope-of-practice expansion for NPs.
