MEDICAL ABBREVIATIONS LETTER I

ICP

Intracranial pressure (ICP) is the pressure exerted by fluids such as cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) inside the skull and on the brain tissue. ICP is measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg) and, at rest, is normally 7–15 mmHg for a supine adult.[1]

I&D
I&D is a time-honored method of draining abscesses to relieve pain and speed healing. Routine cultures and antibiotics are usually unnecessary if an abscess is properly drained. 

Immunoglobulins (Igs) are a group of proteins also known as antibodies. Antibodies provide your body with the first line of defense against invading pathogens. Immunoglobulins can be described as either normal or abnormal.

The immunoelectrophoresis-serum test (IEP-serum) is a blood test used to measure the types of Ig present in your blood, especially IgM, IgG, and IgA.

IOP
Intraocular pressure is the fluid pressure inside the eye.

Eye pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury (mm Hg). Normal eye pressure ranges from 12-22 mm Hg, and eye pressure of greater than 22 mm Hg is considered higher than normal. When the IOP is higher than normal but the person does not show signs of glaucoma, this is referred to as ocular hypertension.
High eye pressure alone does not cause glaucoma. However, it is a significant risk factor. Individuals diagnosed with high eye pressure should have regular comprehensive eye examinations by an eyecare professional to check for signs of the onset of glaucoma.

IUD

An IUD is a tiny device that's put into your uterus to prevent pregnancy.

Both copper IUDs and hormonal IUDs prevent pregnancy by changing the way sperm cells move so they can't get to an egg. If sperm can’t make it to an egg, pregnancy can’t happen.
