Brazilian surfer João Chianca, 22, and American surfer Caitlin Simmers, 16, celebrated their first wins on the World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT) in Portugal. The MEO Rip Curl Pro presented by Corona was concluded in epic waves on Tuesday at Supertubos, with João surfing spectacular tubes in the final against the current rankings leader, 25-year-old Australian Jack Robinson. The young Caitlin defeated experienced surfer Courtney Conlogue, 30, in the American final that closed the third stage of the 2023 season.
The wave conditions were excellent on Tuesday at Supertubos. So much so that the technical direction of the WSL decided to close the MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal using the "overlapping heats" system, with two heats being contested simultaneously, from the round of 16 to the semifinals. It was the first time this happened in the Championship Tour's history.
João Chianca built his victory in the tubes he surfed on the Supertubos rights and defeated the rankings leader, Jack Robinson, by 17.57 to 15.14 points. Chianca's first career win in CT events happened in Portugal, where his older brother, Lucas Chumbo Chianca, reigns in the giant waves of Nazaré. The Brazilian surfer took second place in the ranking from world champion Filipe Toledo and now arrives in Australia practically guaranteed among the 22 who remain competing in the second half of the CT and in direct contention for the world title.
Caitlin Simmers defeated experienced surfer Courtney Conlogue in the American final and at just 16 years old became the second-youngest female surfer to win a CT event, behind only Caroline Marks. The next stage of the championship will be the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach, taking place from April 4th to 14th in Australia.
