"Covid-Proverb", for synthetic voice, is a reimagining of Steve Reich's work, "Proverb".
Like Reich's original work, "Covid-Proverb" sets to music a quotation from Ludwig Wittgenstein, but this time in its Covid + S version, a variant of the S + 7 method invented by Jean Lescure and notably used by Raymond Queneau in his famous "La Cimaise et la Fraction".
As in Reich's work, this quotation is repeated throughout the piece, however, in "Covid-Proverb", the repetitions are based on temporal reduction.
Indeed, in "Covid-Proverb", the quotation from Ludwig Wittgenstein, which is initially stretched to 19 seconds, is reduced by 19 hundredths of a second each time it is repeated, until it is reduced to 19 hundredths of a second in the last repetition.
Echo effects and a ticking clock complete these repetitions.
The work ends with the ticking of the clock, which continues the work alone after the last repetition of the quotation to give the work an exact duration of 19 minutes.
