UNBELIEVABLE, The Life & Times of Philip Henry Mendenhall | Wild Resources

Hello all,
Phil here, I wanted to send everyone a note on how the Wild Resources channel came to be and say thank you for supporting all the work that goes into producing our content.

From the time I could remember walking, I wanted to go fishing. We lived in the country and there were ponds and creeks all around us and it seemed like I was always neck deep in one ambushing frogs, crawfish, and anything else that couldn't outswim me. Wherever we travelled, I had a can of worms and a pole. My mother taught me how to clean fish as she was just as fanatical as me. Hunting started in high school when my best friend bought a 16-gauge single shot shotgun. We hit the road running, starting with squirrels and rabbits and later deer and doves.

I was in Boy Scouts and a buddy brought in some steel leghold traps and I was able to set them without getting caught and again, I was hooked. At the age of 19, I got a few traps and was able to catch some muskrats, beavers, coon, and skunks.

As I was on my own since the age of 17 catching fish, hunting, trapping, and gardening was how I mostly fed myself. I learned at the school of hard knocks. Later I attended some trapping conventions and listened and watched the guests who were experts at all levels of trapping and improved my skills.

I later became a Hunter Safety Instructor as well as a Trapper Education Instructor and have been teaching for over 10 years. I've taken many young people under my wing and taught them to trap, hunt, fish, and garden.

I now live on a 34-acre farm and raise organic vegetables, berries, free range chickens and grass-fed beef. I'm starting to feel my age after 66 circles of the sun and I'm finding that my mind is 18 but my body ain't what it used to be. So, I think it is time to start passing on some of my knowledge and skills to the younger generation before I take it to my grave. I hope you'll learn a few nuggets from my stories and experiences.
