The Battle of Baltimore | Profit From the Past September 12, 1814

The battle of Baltimore began ominously for the British on September 12, when 3,000 American troops confronted a force of 5,000 British soldiers en route to the city. The U.S. force not only succeeded in halting the British land advance, it also killed Britain’s Maj. Gen. Sir Robert Ross, whose detachment had just set fire to Washing D.C. a few weeks prior.

The British were stymied again on September 13, when the defense of Hampstead Hill on Baltimore’s eastern flank proved equally formidable.

After facing such stiff resistance the British decided to bombard Fort McHenry rather than risk a frontal assault. And so, for the next 25 hours the British bombarded the fort, with 1,800 cannonballs fired from a fleet of 19 ships.

Nevertheless, Fort McHenry withstood the onslaught and the British forces withdrew.
Of course, it was during this battle that a young American poet named Francis Scott Key, watching on from a truce ship in the Patapsco, penned the famous lyrics to the Star Spangled Banner. The rest is history...
