On September 22, 1980, the nation of Iraq, led by Saddam Hussein launched a full-scale invasion of neighboring Iran. It would end up being the longest conventional conflict of the 20th century, and resulted in an estimated 1-2 million casualties.

Saddam justified the attack by pointing to provocations from Iran’s Ayatollah Khomeini, who called on Iraqis to overthrow his Ba'ath government one year prior.

Iraq’s Ba’athist government was dominated by Sunni Muslims, though Iraq and Iran both had majority Shia populations at the time.

Of course, Iraq had other motives, as well...
