On August 7 1964, Congress passed the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution giving President Lyndon Johnson the greenlight to launch the Vietnam war. But it was all based on a coordinated lie.

The USS Maddox was besieged by a flotilla of Vietnamese PT boats on August 4, 1964.
Through a monstrous squall, the destroyer reported automatic-weapons fire, more than 20 torpedo attacks, sightings of torpedo wakes, enemy cockpit lights, and searchlight illumination.

And in response, the Maddox destroyer called in as back-up, fired 250 5-inch shells, 123 3-inch shells, and half a dozen depth charges.

There was just one problem…

The enemy they were fighting was a figment of the crew’s collective imagination.

Nevertheless, word of the attack spread, despite a hasty correction from the ship’s captain John Herrick. And when the NSA passed its report on to President Lyndon Johnson, they manipulated the intelligence to suggest the attack was real. On August 7, 1964, Congress passed the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution giving President Lyndon Johnson the greenlight to launch the Vietnam war.

There’s no question that intelligence is everything. And that’s why I’ve launched an entire investment service based largely on contacts within the intelligence community.

One of the companies in my portfolio is even a bleeding-edge software company that helped locate Osama bin Laden.
