This is a capture of me and a friend playing the Soccer mode in Excitebike 64 for the Nintendo 64. This is not an emulator and was not played on the Wii U Virtual Console. This footage was recorded directly from Keet’s Nintendo 64 using a real Excitebike 64 cartridge. I'm player one and Keet is player two.

While I was visiting Keet in Florida, we also managed to record the competitive multiplayer modes from some Nintendo 64 games, including Excitebike 64. Keet had never played Excitebike 64 before, but both of us had played a ton of Rocket League, so he was at least familiar with the concept of car soccer. We did a warm-up round before this to get familiar with the controls.

The soccer mode in this game is rather simple. There are no flying cars or items. You just hit the soccer ball with your motorcycle, although there’s at least unlimited turbo in this mode. One of my favorite techniques is popping a wheelie right underneath the ball to launch it into the air. I showed Keet this trick as well and he managed to use it quite a bit against me.

Despite his lack of experience with this game, Keet played really well and blocked several of my shots. We even tied on the first game, so we did a second full soccer match in order to have a tie breaker. We played on Keet’s HDTV, which has some input lag with old systems, but we didn’t notice it too much in this game.

I used to play this mode back in the day against my friend Drew, but he generally had a hard time winning against me. On a few occasions I was able to play this mode with four people, and I currently have four-player footage posted on my channel, though I’d like to record a higher-quality video of that in the future. In the mean time, here’s some high quality two-player soccer footage. Also, the end of the second match is just plain hilarious.

Recorded with the Hauppauge HD PVR 2 and the official N64 S-video cable. We’re using standard N64 controllers.
