Emergency crews rushed to repair a levee break on a storm-swollen river on California's central coast as flood water swamped local communities.

The Pajaro River's levee rupture has grown to at least 120 meters since it failed last week, officials said. More than 8,500 people have been forced to evacuate, and about 50 were rescued as the water rose.
