Dash cam shows moment Dallas County deputy was hit by SUV

The video from the Dallas County sheriff shows the moment Deputy Brandon Bjoin was helping a driver stuck in the snow on the shoulder of Interstate 80 when he was hit by a black SUV.Show more

Bjoin's body camera flung from its mount and landed in the snow.

Fortunately, the only part of the SUV that made contact with the deputy was the side view mirror.

"There comes the car. And just luckily glances him. Doesn't hit him square," Dallas County Sheriff Adam Infante said as he watched the video captured by Bjoin's camera in his car.

Infante got the news through a phone call.

"I got that phone call and said a deputy had been hit and uh, my heart skipped a beat. I assumed the worst, maybe it's just because it's what we do for a living. But I assumed it was really bad," he said.

Infante says it should serve as a reminder to move over when you see flashing lights and slow down.

"It's sobering to realize how close you are to being seriously hurt or even dying," Infante said. "It's hard to watch. I think everybody who sees it for the first time, their reaction is complete shock."

Bjoin was released from the hospital with bruises on his right arm.

Iowa's law requires all drivers to change lanes or slow down when you see any vehicle on the shoulder with flashing lights.

That goes for tow trucks, emergency vehicles and passenger vehicles.

If you don't, you can be fined at least $100.
