"Growing up in the projects was tough, but it was even harder with a narcissistic, abusive stepfather. He used to beat up my mom and me and break us down with verbal abuse. But I found outlets through gang life and sports. The gang gave me a sense of family, and sports numbed me to what was going on at home. Unfortunately, most of my peers in the gang had similar experiences.
