Setting Out the Frame - Part 3: Oak Casement Window

In part 3 of the Casement Window series we are setting out the mortice positions on the frame timbers we prepared in episode 2. It's an important stage of the process and can make of break a project. It was always the most experienced joiners doing the setting out in bigger workshops, it takes a whole project knowledge and knowing the joints and construction inside out to ensure it is done correctly and that there are no mistakes further down the line. It's very easy to forget a setback or misplace in projects with multiple size rebates and grooves etc, especially if you are going from projects requiring setbacks to ones that do not. This is a simple window, it can definitely get a lot more complicated with curved components and glazing bars etc... full size drawings are quite often required in such cases.

So we are setting out the window frame sections. Mortice positions in the Head and Cill and Tenon positions in the Jambs and Mullion. It's a good idea to draw a Rod of the window cross section and will help understand how each square piece of timber will become a component. It's a great reference for cutting component length too also. On a bigger project I wouldn't draw a rod for every window, just one to define section sizes etc and then reference from measurement's for the overall dimensions.
