Papua (formerly West Irian (1956 – 1973) and Irian Jaya (1973 – 2000)) is a province located on the northern coast of Papua Land , Indonesia, which was established on May 1, 1963. Papua Province was previously named West Irian and Irian Jaya which cover all Tanah Papua, the former residency of West New Guinea. The capital city of Papua is in Jayapura City , which is directly adjacent to the state of Papua New Guinea .
