The Milky Way is a barred spiral galaxy containing between 100 and 400 billion stars, including our sun. It has a supermassive black hole at its center and is about 100,000 light-years in diameter. Studying the Milky Way helps us understand the structure and evolution of galaxies, stars, and planets.
