An Iraqi man was trying to get himself deported by stabbing a university student in 2022, he told the court before being jailed for six years. Rebaz Mohammed, 28, was living in a hotel at the time of the attack, and claimed he had no money or work in the UK, having entered illegally by boat.

The victim was able to escape and call for help after being wounded, so Mohammed did not face a murder indictment, instead he was charged for grievous bodily harm and possessing a knife in a public place.

A Home Office spokesman would not confirm whether Mohammed would be deported after serving his sentence.
