If James Corden is known for one thing and one thing only, it’s definitely the popularity of his viral-video series “Carpool Karaoke” in which he drives around the Los Angeles streets with hugely famous celebrities while singing along to some of their biggest hits. Corden came up with the idea during a BBC fundraiser in 2011 in which he did the exact same thing for the very first time with George Michael. It’s a simple formula, but it quickly became a cultural phenomenon after Corden implemented the idea as a regular segment on “The Late, Late Show” and began booking guests like Adele, Justin Bieber, One Direction, and even Michelle Obama. Within a year, “Carpool Karaoke” had already become one of the most successful YouTube franchises of all time and the Wall Street Journal would report that its views were approaching “Super Bowl” like numbers. So, what went wrong? Well, quite simply put – fans became enraged when they realized that the entire idea was built on the foundation of a lie. As it turns out, James Corden wasn’t actually driving much of anywhere with these celebrities. Instead, the late-night host would simply climb into his car with a big-time celeb and pretend to drive around town while his car was being towed by someone else. Corden would later address this controversy saying that the towing only happens on occasion and that he does handle the driving on his own every once and a while. Not exactly a ringing endorsement for the validity of the segment if you ask me. But that’s far from the biggest controversy one of his bits has ever created.
