A denominação da localidade foi dada por Antônio Villas Boas, fundador de Vera Cruz do Oeste, por julgar que a primeira missa celebrada na localidade teve as mesmas características da primeira missa rezada no Brasil. Por isto, o pioneiro resolveu prestar uma homenagem à nossa Pátria, dando para a cidade um de seus primeiros nomes, Vera Cruz.
