But as much fun as KSI was having online, in real life, things weren’t nearly as easy. At the age of 16, after a steep decline in his grades, he was asked to leave school. Rather than switch to someplace else, KSI abandoned his education completely. As I’m sure you can imagine, this wasn’t exactly met with a celebration from his parents. While they might not have realized it at the time, his folks didn’t have all that much to worry about. Sure, a year or so into running his channel, he’d only have around 7,000 subscribers, but another year later that number had tripled as KSI’s lovable and goofy nature began to capture the attention of fans all over the world. When asked to comment on what helped spark his rise, he’d inform Vice: “A lot of people think being at the top means you have to be the best at a certain game. You don’t. It’s more about personality.” And soon enough, KSI would prove that very point with the first time he ever went viral.
