All three of these men were music fanatics from day one. They listened to everything from old funk and soul records that their aunt kept lying around the house to hip-hop greats like Tupac, Biggie, T.I., and Goodie Mob. But it was Takeoff who spearheaded the trio’s decision to get serious about music and make a career out of it. He downloaded beats from SoundClick and started making demos in the studio while Quavo and Offset were off participating in sports. In 2017 he’d describe this moment in time to The Fader, telling them: “I was grinding, which is just what I loved doing. Just making something and creating for me... I was getting my own pleasure out of it, because it’s what I liked doing. I’d wait for Quavo to get back from football practice and I’d play my songs for him.” After hearing the kind of music Takeoff was creating, eventually, the other two realized that he had the right idea and they’d drop out of athletics to pursue a career in music alongside him.
