AFTER arguably becoming the biggest name in professional wrestling of all time throughout the 80s, the man formerly known as the “Immortal Hulk Hogan” is now staring down the barrel of his very real mortality with recent rumors circulating online suggesting that this former physical dynamo is no longer able to walk without the assistance of a cane. But before we dig into the veracity of that statement, let’s take a look back at Hulk’s golden years. Born Terry Gene Bollea [BO-LAY-UH] on August 11th, 1953 in Augusta, Georgia – Hulk was the youngest son of Pete and Ruth Bollea -- a construction worker and a homemaker respectively. As a boy, Hulk’s family moved to Tampa Bay, Florida where he remembers being bullied as a child due to the immense size of his head. In point of fact, Hulk was a gigantic kid and by the time he was a senior in high school he was already six-foot-seven, weighing an epic 300-pounds. Thanks in large part to his physicality, Hulk excelled in sports as a teenager, especially bowling and baseball. He even made it as far as the Little League World Series, attracting scouts from the MLB, but an injury would de-rail his potential career in the sport. At the age of 16, Hogan discovered wrestling. In particular, he became a massive fan of Dusty Rhodes. And when he went onto pursue his education at Hillsborough Community College followed by the University of South Florida, he’d moonlight as a musician. That’s right, another major passion of Hulk’s youth was music. He played guitar in junior high for a band called Infinity’s End and through the mid to late 70s he pursued a career in music as a member of a group called Ruckus.
