At a news conference on Parliament Hill, Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino announces the federal government is launching public consultations for establishing a foreign influence transparency registry. He is joined by Trade Minister Mary Ng. The consultations will end on May 9, 2023. The registry will require those acting in Canada on behalf of a foreign government or state to disclose their ties. The announcement comes amid growing concerns related to alleged Chinese interference in recent Canadian elections. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently announced a series of measures aimed at addressing foreign election interference allegations. The United States and Australia have foreign agent registries, while the United Kingdom is considering implementing one. (March 10, 2023)
