Date – Friday, March 10th - 2023 – 40 Martyrs of Sebaste

The 40 Martyrs of Sebaste were a group of Roman soldiers stationed in Sebaste who were tortured and martyred for their Catholic faith in 320 AD. After their refusal to renounce their faith, they were put in a pond of frozen water overnight, and all but one died. The mother of the surviving soldier, Melito, exhorted him to persevere to the end, and upon his death, he joined his companions in martyrdom. Their ashes were to be dispersed in the wind and their bones thrown into the river, but God conserved them so that the faithful could gather them later and keep them as precious relics. St. Basil praised the martyrs for their heroism and compared their arrival in heaven to a triumphal procession into Rome. Prof. Plinio Corrêa de Oliveira praised the mother of Melito for her selflessness and grandeur of soul in offering her son for martyrdom.
