Children of the Corn, 2023, Summary

The history of Children of the Corn is a bit strange. "It's a Good Life," a classic Twilight Zone episode, seems to have been the inspiration for the King story, which was turned into a bad 1984 movie. Even though few people would put the movie in their top five favorite Stephen King adaptations, it spawned a franchise of 10 movies, which is more than any other King story. Why might this be happening? Is the story just less self-contained than, say, The Shining or Carrie, so that it can be turned into more than one movie? Are they cheap to make in general? Or could there be more?

After an eerie beginning, Children of the Corn is about a small, very rural town in Nebraska where the corn industry is dying and the economy is going down with it. The adults are arguing with each other and getting angry about their future. They don't listen to their children's ideas or feelings because they think they are unrealistic or just plain stupid. Those kids seem to be floating around in the world, untethered from the care and attention of the adults. They are playing morbid pretend games in the cornfields. It sounds a little bit like a modern-day code word.
