Full name: Marcus Aurelius Caesar Original name: Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Augustus (until 161 CE) Marcus Annius Verus, a Roman emperor (161–180) best known for his Meditations on Stoic philosophy, was born in Rome, Italy, on April 26, 121 CE, and died in Vindobona, Austria, or Sirmium, Pannonia, on March 17, 180. For many centuries, Marcus Aurelius has represented in the West the Roman Empire's Golden Period.

The final of Rome's "Five Excellent Emperors" was Marcus Aurelius. His rule represented the end of a time when there was internal peace and effective government. The empire swiftly plunged into civil strife after his death. In the West, he has stood in for the Roman Empire's Golden Period for many years.

Throughout the midst of his political campaigns and administrative duties, Marcus Aurelius wrote the Meditations, his observations. It's unclear to what extent he intended it to be seen by other people. It demonstrates how strongly Stoicism influenced Marcus and has been revered for centuries as the ideas of a philosopher-king.

Marcus Aurelius and another young man were chosen as Antoninus Pius's successors when they were both 17 years old. Antoninus Pius ruled the Roman Empire from 138 to 161. Before gaining control in a peaceful manner after Antoninus's death, Marcus served a lengthy apprenticeship at Antoninus' side, studying the workings of government and taking on public positions.
