The video discusses the importance of grip in gloves and the difficulties in evaluating, quantifying, and communicating a specific value for grip. The definition of grip is a person’s grasping strength when holding an object, and it varies based on the weight, shape, surface material, temperature, and surface finish of the object. Grip is essential for reducing fatigue, increasing safety, and improving efficiency in the workplace. However, finding gloves with the correct grip for a particular task can be challenging, and a testing standard that measures glove grip across different environmental factors and on different surfaces does not exist. To accurately measure glove grip, the Coefficient of Friction between the palm surface of the glove and the surface of the object being gripped must be quantified. Test methods exist to evaluate slip resistance between shoe soles and walking surfaces, and these methods can be modified to evaluate glove palm friction force on specified testing surfaces. Once test parameters have been set, the Coefficient of Friction values for different gloves can accurately be compared to each other, and manufacturers can evaluate their gloves for grip in dry, wet, and oily conditions, and give each of them a ranking or rating for grip performance.
