In Chapter 5, we saw how Trotsky and Stalin claimed opposing views. Their real friction was on who was in charge. In every aspect of what they were trying to accomplish, they essentially agreed. Stalin may not have been a pure Marxist, but he did believe in an authoritarian view of governance.
