India's struggle for freedom from British rule was a long and arduous one, spanning over a century. The movement for Indian independence can be traced back to the 1857 Indian Rebellion, also known as the Sepoy Mutiny, which was a significant uprising against the British East India Company's rule in India.

The Indian National Congress, founded in 1885, played a crucial role in the Indian independence movement. Its early leaders, such as Dadabhai Naoroji, Gopal Krishna Gokhale, and Bal Gangadhar Tilak, fought for Indian self-rule through peaceful means, such as petitions, protests, and boycotts.

The 20th century saw a new wave of Indian leaders emerge, such as Mahatma Gandhi, who used non-violent civil disobedience as a means to demand independence from British rule. The Salt Satyagraha or the Dandi March in 1930, the Quit India Movement in 1942, and the Non-Cooperation Movement in 1920 were some of the significant movements led by Gandhi.

Other prominent leaders in the Indian freedom struggle included Jawaharlal Nehru, Subhash Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh, and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. These leaders and their followers fought for freedom through various means, including armed struggle, political activism, and non-cooperation.

Finally, India gained independence on August 15, 1947, after a long and difficult struggle. The Indian Independence Act of 1947 was passed by the British Parliament, granting India full independence and partitioning the country into two separate states, India and Pakistan. The partition, however, led to a lot of violence and bloodshed, causing significant loss of life and displacement of people.
