Volcanoes are fissures in the crust of Earth-like planets that allow hot lava, volcanic ash, and gases to escape from underground magma chambers.

On Earth, volcanoes are most commonly found where tectonic plates diverge or converge, mostly underwater. For example, mid-ocean ridges like the Mid-Atlantic Ridge have volcanoes caused by diverging tectonic plates, and the Ring of Fire in the Pacific has volcanoes caused by converging tectonic plates. Volcanoes can also form where crustal plates widen and thin, such as the East African Rift and the Wells Gray Clearwater Volcanic Zone and Rio Grande Rift Valley in North America. Extraplate volcanism is hypothesized to arise from diapirs rising from the Earth's core-mantle boundary at a depth of 3,000 kilometers. This leads to hotspot volcanism, of which the Hawaiian hotspot is an example. Volcanoes don't usually form where two tectonic plates slip through each other.
