Family Hike at Harpers Ferry: Maryland Heights Trail

Even though Maryland weather is hit or miss this time of year, we had a great day hiking in historic 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗙𝗲𝗿𝗿𝘆!

We decided to check out the 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘆𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗛𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗹: it is roughly 4.5 miles from the downtown Harpers Ferry.

📍Head over the footbridge just past The Point next to John Brown’s Fort
📍Follow the signs to the Maryland Heights Trail
📍Follow the green blaze trail
📍Choose between the 2.8 mile Overlook Cliff Trail (red)
📍Or the more strenuous 4.7 mile Stone Fort Trail (blue)
📍Both options are up and back

My family opted for the Overlook Cliff Trail which went past a Naval Battery overlook + descended to a clearing where we could see the whole downtown area along with the majestic birds flying around the cliffs.

There are lots of great places to hike and explore around historic Harpers Ferry, which is situated on the border of 3 states: West Virginia, Virginia + Maryland.

The downtown area is free to access, but you need to pay admission to park at the Visitors Center (highly recommended during peak times) + take the shuttle as well as access the trails and historic buildings.
