The ancient understanding of who God was changed, and primarily as a result of Jesus' actions, teachings, and assertions of who he was himself. Although Jesus didn't use the 'straightforward' language we like to hear in our modern western mindset he certainly used the language of his day, in a context in which is was clearly understood that he was indeed claiming to be the God of Abraham and Moses, the God the Israelite faith.
