Performance Notes:

Among the most played etude books for trumpet, Théo Charlier’s “Trente-six Études Transcendentes,” or “Twenty-six Transcendent Studies” has stood the test of time and remains one of the greatest in the trumpet repertoire. The pieces are both technically and stylistically very challenging; and additionally, the book features some of the most musically satisfying pieces in the solo trumpet literature. As such, they have become commonly used for both instruction and for purposes of auditions and even public performances. While there are several of the etudes which would be considered top tier in the entire repertoire, the second, “No 2. Du Style” is certainly at or near the very top.
While the middle of the piece might be characterized at moments as light, warm, hopeful, and even euphoric, the beginning and the ending—indeed a majority of the piece—is rather melancholic. The players should attempt to capture the weightiness of the music with as dark a sound as possible. There can be a more light and gentle quality in the major section in the middle. The trills need not be particularly fast. More attention should be paid to the rubato presentation of the trills than speed.
It should be noted that, as it relates to the original piece for trumpet, when played on a trumpet in C, the B-flat Version is best suited, and when played on trumpet in B-flat, the A-flat version is best. This A-flat version is also the most natural key for trombone, euphonium, and baritone. Ultimately, it is up to the soloist to determine which key is ideal for him or her.
Also of note is the addition of two measures rest for the soloist. Added to allow extra time for the performer to rest, perhaps in the context of a larger performance, they may be omitted. Additionally, the player may choose to eschew the four-measure piano introduction.
