Africa’s Largest City On Water
The largest city on water in Benin is Ganvié, which is also known as the "Venice of Africa". It is located in the south-central part of the country, near the city of Cotonou. Ganvié is a village built entirely on stilts and platforms over the Lake Nokoué, and it is estimated to have a population of around 20,000 people.
Ganvié was founded in the 16th century by the Tofinu people, who were fleeing from slavery and seeking refuge on the lake. Today, the village is a major tourist attraction in Benin, and visitors can explore the community by boat and learn about its unique way of life. Fishing is the primary source of livelihood for the residents of Ganvié, and the village is known for its vibrant markets, traditional crafts, and cultural festivals.
