South Korea and the US - largest military exercise in 5 years

The United States and South Korea have announced their plans to conduct their largest joint military exercises in five years, including a computer-simulated command post training and a large-scale field training exercise, as tensions continue to rise with North Korea.

The exercises, called Freedom Shield and Warrior Shield FTX, will take place from March 13 to 23, and will involve both countries' military forces, including a combined amphibious drill. The announcement comes just days after the United States flew a long-range B-1B bomber over the Korean Peninsula in a show of force against North Korea.

North Korea has previously threatened to take "unprecedentedly strong action" against such exercises, viewing them as an invasion rehearsal. In response, it is likely that North Korea will conduct missile tests, further escalating tensions in the region.

The United States and South Korea have been expanding their joint military exercises in recent months, citing an evolving North Korean nuclear threat. Last year, North Korea test-fired more than 70 missiles, many of which were nuclear-capable weapons designed to strike the United States mainland and South Korea.
