The Last Great Race On Earth - The Sled Dogs are the athletes, and the Musher is the Coach. 1000 miles from Anchorage to Nome, Alaska. The winners will cross the finish line in approx. 10 days. This is a 24/7 race with 2 mandatory 8 Hour stops and 1 mandatory - 24 hour stop. There are veterinarians at each checkpoint along the Iditarod Trail who check the health of all the dogs. They start with 14 dogs on the gang line and if they get injured they can not replace them with another dog. They must carry the dog in their sled to the next checkpoint where the Iditarod Air Force will fly the sick or injured Sled Dog back home to its kennel.
