The Cullinan diamond, also known as the Star of Africa, is the largest rough gem-quality diamond ever found, weighing 3,106.75 carats. It was discovered in South Africa in 1905 and was named after the mine's owner, Sir Thomas Cullinan.

The diamond was purchased by the Transvaal government, which then presented it as a gift to King Edward VII of the United Kingdom in 1907. The king entrusted the diamond to the renowned diamond-cutting firm of Asscher Brothers in Amsterdam, who spent eight months studying the stone and planning the cutting process.

Eventually, the diamond was cut into nine major stones and 96 smaller ones. The largest of these stones, known as the Cullinan I or Great Star of Africa, weighs 530.20 carats and is set in the Sovereign's Sceptre with Cross. The second-largest stone, the Cullinan II or Lesser Star of Africa, weighs 317.4 carats and is set in the Imperial State Crown.

The Cullinan diamond and its various cut stones have become part of the British Crown Jewels and have been worn by several British monarchs on ceremonial occasions. The diamond is currently owned by Queen Elizabeth II and is on display at the Tower of London.
