The Pygmalion Effect
The Pygmalion effect, also known as the self-fulfilling prophecy, is a phenomenon where an individual's beliefs and expectations about another person can influence the other person's behavior and performance. This effect is named after the Greek myth of Pygmalion, who sculpted a statue and fell in love with it, eventually bringing it to life through his belief and expectations.
In a work or educational setting, the Pygmalion effect can occur when a manager or teacher has high expectations for an employee or student, leading to increased performance and achievement. On the other hand, low expectations can lead to decreased performance and achievement. This effect can be unintentional or deliberate, and it can have long-lasting effects on an individual's confidence and self-esteem.
Awareness of the Pygmalion effect can be used to positively impact performance and achievement by setting high expectations and providing support and encouragement. Conversely, it is important to avoid the negative impact of low expectations and ensure that all individuals are given equal opportunities to succeed.
