Nuclear Russia
Russia is one of the world's largest nuclear powers, possessing the world's largest stockpile of nuclear weapons. The country's nuclear program began in the 1940s under the Soviet Union and continued after the collapse of the USSR in 1991.
Russia has a variety of nuclear facilities, including nuclear power plants, research reactors, and nuclear weapon production facilities. The country has 10 nuclear power plants with a total of 38 operational nuclear reactors, which provide about 20% of Russia's electricity. In addition, Russia has a number of nuclear research facilities, including the Institute for Nuclear Research in Moscow and the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna.
Russia's nuclear weapons program is shrouded in secrecy, but it is estimated that the country has approximately 6,375 nuclear warheads, making it the largest nuclear power in the world. The country has developed a wide range of nuclear weapons, including intercontinental ballistic missiles, submarine-launched ballistic missiles, and nuclear-capable bombers.
Russia is also involved in international efforts to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and has signed a number of treaties, including the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty. However, relations between Russia and other countries, particularly the United States, have sometimes been tense, with disputes over nuclear arms control and non-proliferation efforts.
