A high-speed chase that crossed two counties and involved a stolen vehicle ended in a collision in Battle Creek on Dec. 11. The Battle Creek Police Department reported that Kalamazoo public safety officers initiated the pursuit of an 18-year-old suspect in a stolen vehicle at approximately 4:30 p.m.

The chase continued onto I-94, and Kalamazoo County sheriff's deputies took over from there. At one point during the pursuit, the driver reached speeds of up to 100 mph. Eventually, an officer used stop sticks to slow down the vehicle and damage its tires, which caused the driver to swerve into the oncoming traffic lane while approaching the intersection of Riverside and Columbia.

A dashcam video captured an SUV attempting to turn right at the intersection, before colliding with the alleged stolen vehicle. After the crash, one of the vehicle's occupants was seen with their hands out the passenger-side door, while a deputy with his gun drawn yelled for the suspect to put their hands up and not move.

The driver and four minor passengers were taken into custody at approximately 5 p.m. One passenger was transported to Bronson Battle Creek Hospital for minor injuries. The driver faces charges of fleeing and eluding, as well as possession of a stolen vehicle and is currently being held in Kalamazoo County Jail. Police released the minors to their parents.

The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers associated with high-speed chases, and the importance of law enforcement officers taking appropriate measures to ensure public safety.
