UN nuclear watchdog will put “tourniquet” on uranium information after Iran trip: chief | FULL
The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, spoke with the press on Saturday, after ongoing talks with Iran on two sets of important matters, days after it was revealed that the country had enriched particles of uranium to near weapons-grade and raising new alarm over its long-disputed nuclear program.
“We have put a tourniquet on the bleeding of information and lack of continuity of knowledge we had,” Grossi said in his update. “We will try to go as fast as we can on investigation into uranium traces at undeclared sites in Iran.”
Grossi began meetings in Tehran on Friday — meetings that diplomats said were meant to push Iran to co-operate with an IAEA investigation into uranium traces found at undeclared sites that had been enriched close to nuclear-weapons grade.
His visit comes amid contacts with Tehran on the origin of the uranium particles enriched to up to 83.7 per cent purity, very close to the 90 per cent threshold for weaponization, at its underground Fordow enrichment plant, according to a report by the United Nations nuclear watchdog.
