On this day in 51 AD, Nero was crowned princeps iuventutis, the first step towards becoming Emperor of the Roman Empire. His reign would be marked by internal strife and economic crisis, and his death in 68 AD would be the end of the Julio-Claudian dynasty.
In 1351, King Ramathibodi was crowned ruler of Siam, which is now known as Thailand. His rule was marked by expanding the kingdom's territory and developing its infrastructure.
In 1665, the English King Charles II declared war on the Netherlands, sparking the Second Anglo-Dutch War. This conflict would end in 1667 with the signing of the Treaty of Breda.
In 1789, the first United States Congress convened and declared the newly-signed Constitution to be in effect. This marked the official beginning of the United States of America as we know it today.
And finally, in 1797, John Adams was inaugurated as the second President of the United States, with Thomas Jefferson as the second Vice President. Adams' presidency would be marked by the XYZ Affair, the Quasi-War with France, and the signing of the Alien and Sedition Acts.
