The Importance of Reentry Planning for Incarcerated Individuals

In this video clip, Sean Dustin and Susan Casey discuss reentry for incarcerated individuals. Sean emphasizes the importance of thinking about reentry from the moment of incarceration, rather than waiting until close to release. He notes that often people do not consider reentry until it is too late, which contributes to the high rates of recidivism among those with shorter sentences.

Sean also mentions that while there are programs available for therapy and rehabilitation, there are often waiting lists and limited access, particularly in federal prisons. Susan agrees and comments on the absurdity of the system.

Sean compares trying to work on yourself in prison, to politicians spending more time trying to get reelected than serving their constituents. In prison for short time inmates, you probably spend 70-90% of your time figuring out how to get along and navigate the new environment and trying not to get yourself beat up in the process.
