This essay aims to explicate, analyse and explore how photographs, as text, cannot be understood adequately outside of historical; cultural and social contexts.

This is particularly pertinent when exploring photographic representations of gender, sexuality and sexual difference. An overview of the historical emergence of representations of the gay/male body is presented to show how the prevailing ideologies of the time governing what was considered to be acceptable sexuality led to the production, regulation and silencing of photographic representations of the gay/male body.

By mapping a historical perspective attention is drawn to how changing legislative frameworks and social conditions allowed for increasing visibility in terms of public representations of gay/male body/sexuality.
